About me, if you're really that interested

It's taken me 20 years to develop the weariness and cynicism I have towards most of the world these days.  Being Welsh is probably not a great help on that front, although neither is being a Cardiff City supporter which has contributed to the majority of the stress and the celebration in my life.  These days, football serves as a stress relief for me.  Singing and bellowing my support for 11 men who represent the club and the city that I feel closest to is irreplaceable - if I still have a voice left after a match, I've failed.

There's more to me than just football though.

I tend to enjoy swimming and cycling, both of which I've done since I was knee high to a grasshopper living in the little dump of a town near Bridgend called Kenfig Hill.  If anywhere's worse than Bridgend, Kenfig Hill is it.  Having said that, the open space around it kept me entertained as a child, as me, my dad and my brother would forever go walking, exploring and just generally milling round for what felt like whole weekends but in reality was probably only a few hours on a Sunday morning.

Swimming is a particular pet like (well, you can have a pet hate, so why not?) of mine.  Frankly it's relaxing, and being able to shut out the sounds of life by dropping just below the water is quite an underrated convenience.  Stress relief?  Definitely.

I other news, I'm not amused by baked beans, Friends, being too warm or taxis.
Naturally, I have a strong love for tea, sausage, chick flicks (don't ask!) and making Welsh cakes.  I think those qualities make me a damned good flatmate.

I also love flying.  I should make this quite clear now, I don't have vertigo in any way, shape or form and frankly would have no qualms parachuting or bungee jumping.  But flying is just amazing - I've done it often enough to know that floating just above the cloud tops with cotton wool cloud tops below you and nothing but blue skies and sunlight above, I feel untouchable.

My "trump card" is that I can fly an aircraft.  I was a Flight Sergeant in the Air Training Corps and as such, I've been trained to fly light aircraft and have roughly 20 hours flying time under my belt.  I firmly believe that you get a freedom whilst flying that the two dimensions of driving, walking and cycling could simply never rival.

To acquire a pilot's license and to own my own plane remains the peak of my life's ambitions.

A Welshman born and bred, I'm now living in South Yorkshire, taking joint honours in Journalism and French at the University of Sheffield. The former is pretty much my reason for creating this blog, though it will be far more impersonal, for now at least, simply because that's how I write.
